 High fashion Modeling:

Educating yourself to understand how editorial print modeling realistically "looks" in a high fashion magazine is the first step to understanding the variations of different types of editorial modeling and how it differs from other more common types of "commercial" print modelling... work. Editorial work in a magazine is a great "kick-start" for a model's career. It is the experience that many strive for.

"Editorial" print modelling refers to the "magazine experience" for the model in which a "story" is told without words, but instead with photographic pictures (or sets of pictures) of the model in a high fashion magazine... This type of print modeling marks a very "prestigious" turning point in a model's career. Her work includes designers, makeup, hairstyles, skincare, etc., as told and expressed through an illustrated story... Showcasing society's current fashion and beauty trends. Editorial modeling can even tell a story about all the different aspects of people's lifestyles... If you buy any high-end fashion magazine, you can find plenty of examples of editorial print work.

Some editorials in magazines are considered very prestigious as they set the standards and trends for the current and "near future" of the market in which the illustrated story is told... Look at magazines from months, years, or even decades ago. Somehow, the editorial photos you can find from that period have been part of the history of fashion, beauty or lifestyle represented by that magazine staff...

Who thinks about the editorial story concepts in these elite fashion magazines? All over the world there are teams of people working and contributing to various top journals... These people write and create their concepts of what styles, models, designers and trends are "IN" for any unknown period of time... This makes them a very important part of the modeling industry. While browsing these magazines, you should note that there is no "editorial" advertisement for a "specific" company, so if you see a particular product being promoted with the 'logo' then it is an advertisement...commercial print advertisement... If the editorial "looks like" but you see the company name in capital letters... it's meant to tell a story for that company's image of what they want to sell to the consumer. High-end fashion and beauty clients can place some creative, multi-page print ads in magazines in a way that can mimic an editorial spread... The biggest difference is the ratio of editorial fashion ads published for a magazine versus what the model charges to do a commercial, fashion ad for a high-end client...

For editorial modeling purposes, pay close attention to how expressive, awkward, dramatic, artistic, and creative the model's poses are compared to the more refined poses you'll see in a catalog that emphasizes selling #1 clothes... Remember, the editorial model supports the story and concept through editorial images in magazines where the main emphasis is on story or trends... In the magazine's editorial (pictorial) publication, there will be some sort of reference to the names of the designers and the cost of the featured clothing and/or accessories, but this is not intended to act as a specific advertisement...

These magazine releases are getting a lot of attention. Surprisingly, while the editorial model makes a strong statement "in the story", it's just unfortunate for the model that it's NOT a high paying job (perhaps just a few hundred dollars)... This may be one of the only downsides to being an editorial model to begin with. When you probably need money the most (if you haven't saved enough at this stage), that income "doesn't go very far in paying the high bills that come with living and working in the big city..." “Most expect models appearing in a famous fashion magazine to be well compensated for the money, but they are not because they are not a paid advertisement by a client... It is a special feature created and offered by the magazine.

It seems that from the fashion industry's point of view, it's the "prestigious" experience that holds so much value for the model, so models have accepted that fact (whether it's really fair or not)... After all, when the magazine hires a model for an editorial publication, they are hired to serve as a model representing the magazine's concept and creative story...that's a reservation.... This is not a tax deduction for the model. The potential tear-off page may (or may not) bring more prestige, and it may work for the model, as it's really not guaranteed no matter what anyone is trying to present as a reason to work for that little money... Magazines play such a big role in the modeling and fashion industry that it's a tough argument on the part of the model... Magazines are more monopolizing this fact, of course, so they will always find another model looking for their big break, accepting their terms... Could these famous fashion magazines pay more for their featured editorial models? Only they know.

Remember this fact; In the modeling industry, anyone can be changed... The sad truth, yes. The ideal goal is to study and adapt until you decide you don't want to model anymore (before your industry decides you're done)... It doesn't quite work that way because trends change, models age, and new-faced models are popping up everywhere... There are more reasons, of course, but the fact that there will always be someone else to replace any model is the reason why magazines have such a low solvency for their editorial placements...
